Feldenkrais training according to Elisabet Bloom
The training comprises 105 days divided into 15 Blocks. Participants are limited to six students. That number can be given a close personal attention by the trainer as well as time to learn and practise each other’s experience of the training. Thanks to this, a group-cohesiveness is created that strengthens the self-confidence and gives higher quality to the result of the training. By limiting the number of participants I have also optimized the pedagogical effect of group- dynamic, which makes possible a somewhat shorter time of training with maintained effect and quality.
Each day is dedicated to a certain theme. The day before the students get a written description of that theme and of the practices that will follow. Say that the theme is the shoulder blade; I explain the musculature of the blade and demonstrate its functions. The students are then repeating these FI movements (manipulons) on each other and discussing their experiences thereof. At the end of the day I give an ATM lesson subjected to the theme, which contributes to the students body awareness.
As from Block 11 to the end of the training I give daily one student an individual lesson. Before the lesson the student is asked to walk around in the room while we others analyze the movements. After discussion I begin the lesson according to the suggestions of the students. In case I feel that a deviation is called for I am carefully motivating that for the students. After the lesson the student walks around the room again and the result is jointly evaluated.
When I demonstrate the theme of the day to each one of the students I describe in detail what I am sensing and how I perform the manipulon. The demonstration (and the ATM lesson) is currently filmed. The film is transferred to a DVD of which each student gets a copy at the end of the Block. This makes it possible for repetition at home of every training day for checking and consolidating of what has been learnt.
At the demonstration I adjust myself to the habitual pattern of behaviour of each student and relate my observations so the students. This gives them an insight of the variations that may occur and of in which way I am adjusting the manipulon accordingly. After the demonstration, each student recounts to the comrades his/her physical and mental feelings, which enriches their insight and understanding of these.
Thereafter, when the students practise on each other, they have to feel their way to the variety of the manipulon that is best applicable to each one.
The day after, the students relate their experience gained during and after the ATM the day before. The discussion that follows enriches everybody’s experience. In Addition to the everyday ATM, I dedicate one whole day to ATM from Block 7 and five Blocks ahead. To these days the students get a detailed description of the structure, didactics and learning process of the ATM-lessons. A student giving an ATM lesson to the group, after which the experience is discussed amongst all, ends those days.
At the six Trainings and the tens of Advanced I have given I have found my concept to be well functioning. The students are facing the reality with a solid knowledge of FM and a strong self-confidence, which are the prerequisites of a successful work as practitioner. After the training my students may at any time come back to me with questions regarding their own practice.
The Feldenkrais Training according to Elisabet Bloom covers a period of four years with 21 weeks (105 days) of training, usually in periods of 7-9 days three to four meetings a year. On completion of the four year training participants receive certificates as authorized Feldenkrais Practitioners according to Elisabet Bloom.
